Brentwood Student Named YoungArts Merit Winner

Roberta Alaman is the merit winner in the Voice Popular division and will receive cash awards, mentorship and professional development opportunities.

Local Brentwood student Roberta Alaman has been named a 2018 National YoungArts Foundation Merit winner in Voice Popular.

Alaman, a student at Palisades High school, joins 757 other students from 47 states across the country who won awards in literary, visual design and performing arts. As part of her prize, Alaman will receive a cash award of up to $10,000, an opportunity to participate in YoungArts programs nationwide and work with renowned mentors to help achieve her artistic goals.

Among the programs she will take part in are the YoungArts Miami (February 20–25, 2018), YoungArts Los Angeles (March 24–March 29, 2018) and YoungArts New York (April 24–29, 2018), where she’ll join professional network of distinguished artists.

Alaman, who has performed in local productions of “Spring Awakening” and “The Heights” will have opportunities to showcase her vocal talents at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, D.C.), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Sotheby’s (New York) and New World Center (Miami).

“YoungArts congratulates all of the 2018 winners,” said YoungArts President and CEO Carolina García Jayaram. “This extraordinary group of young artists represents the vibrancy of our culture for years to come and we look forward to supporting and encouraging them at key junctures in their careers.”
