Student Safety at Paul Revere

LADOT has approved a plan to remove a dangerous crosswalk at the middle school and replace it with a loop detector

At the urging of Councilmember Mike Bonin, Paul Revere Charter Middle School’s crosswalk at Brinkley and Allenford avenues will be replaced by a loop detector, designed to sense when a car is stopped at an intersection.

The detector will then direct the appropriate light signals to turn on or off on Sunset and Mandeville Canyon Road, north of the school, where accessibility is easier and pedestrian visibility is better.

The move comes after Bonin and his staff, in conjunction with parents, school officials, police and transportation staffers discussed concerns about drivers speeding through the heavily-trafficked crosswalk.

Los Angeles Department of Transport (LADOT) has already identified funding for the new loop detector. This latest safety improvement is in addition to the previous seven crosswalks used by students near the middle school that have already been revamped into more visible, permanent continental crosswalks.

According to Bonin’s office, the effort is part of a broader campaign by Bonin and Mayor Eric Garcetti to reduce severe and fatal collisions in Los Angeles. The effort, Vision Zero, aims to address an epidemic of traffic fatalities in Los Angeles that are the leading cause of death in Los Angeles County of children under the age of 14.
