Brentwood Cultural Events This Week at The Getty Museum and Brentwood Library

A Virtual Conference About a Rich Culture and Family-Friendly Reading Events

By Dolores Quintana

In a groundbreaking event celebrating the global launch of the Digital Florentine Codex (DFC), a virtual conference will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This online-only program is free and open for registration via Zoom. You can register at the Getty website in English and Spanish. You can also view the complete program on the website

The conference, offered in both English and Spanish, will bring together experts who have contributed to the creation of a digital edition of a 16th-century encyclopedic manuscript that delves into Nahuatl culture and language. The Digital Florentine Codex (DFC) introduces a newly digitized, downloadable manuscript, complete with transcriptions and translations of the original Nahuatl and Spanish texts.

It also provides searchable images, paving the way for fresh avenues of research into Mexica culture and revolutionizing our global comprehension of the conquest of Mexico. The DFC emerges as a valuable resource within the growing domain of digital humanities projects that prioritize Indigenous perspectives.

During this conference, members of the project team will illuminate the intricate process of creating the DFC. Additionally, esteemed guest speakers will explore digital initiatives that grant public and community access to manuscripts and documents in the diverse Indigenous languages of Mexico. This convergence of knowledge promises to bridge the past with the present, fostering a richer understanding of Mexica culture and the enduring significance of Indigenous voices.
