Incident Occurs at La Brea Tar Pits; Students Transported to Hospitals
Eight teenage students fell ill during a field trip to the La Brea Tar Pits today after ingesting cannabis edibles, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department
The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. at 5801 W Wilshire Blvd in the Mid-Wilshire area. An on-site security officer discovered the students, whose school remains unidentified, in an acutely ill state and promptly called 9-1-1.
Upon arrival, Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics found the teenagers with altered levels of consciousness. They were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals for further medical evaluation. All are reported to be in fair condition. According to a report by ABC 7 News, the students were not from a school in the Los Angeles United School District.
The La Brea Tar Pits Twitter account confirmed the incident, stating, “Today, several high school students who were on a chaperoned field trip to La Brea Tar Pits became ill. Our staff acted quickly to assess the situation and seek medical aid. The students were treated on scene and taken to nearby hospitals.”
First responders determined that the students’ symptoms were the result of ingesting substances unrelated to their visit to the Tar Pits.
“We extend our care and concern to the students and their families and wish them a healthy recovery,” the tweet concluded.
