Brentwood Residents Share Fond Memories of New York Bagel Co. as Beloved Spot Loses Lease

Longtime Customers Pay Tribute to Community Staple and Owners Ted and Patra Cichowski

Ever since we published the news that Brentwood’s New York Bagel Co. owned by Ted and Patra Cichowski for 21 years, tributes from Brentwood residents and customers have been sent to our email box. We thought that you might be interested in reading how important New York Bagel Co. is to Brentwood.

The last day for the bagel shop is December 31, 2024.

Bill and Chris Harper: “New York Bagel Company has been our go-to place for bagels and brunch for decades. We have a weekly bagel order and miss them greatly when we leave the area on vacation or business. Ted and his wife Patra are delightful hosts, the chef in the kitchen, Manny, and the friendly staff of servers make every visit a pleasure. Manny makes wonderful soups, salads, sandwiches, and bagels in the old tradition that folks can get your teeth into.

No store-bought bagels here, instead they’re made fresh daily. If you haven’t tried their pumpernickel/raisin bagels, you haven’t really had bagels. The matzo brei is mouthwatering and the matzo balls steeped in clear broth with plenty of chicken and root vegetables are as light as air in his matzo ball soup. It’s a great place for brunch and we hope that their forced move to a new location works out well for them. We’ll follow them wherever they end up in the Los Angeles area.”

Dan Sinaiko: “I just wanted to write in and say how heartbroken my family is about NY Bagel on San Vicente losing its lease.  NYB is not just a restaurant – for 30 years it’s been part of the fabric of our neighborhood.  People don’t just come here for the food (which is excellent) – they come here for the community – to see friends, spend family time, linger over a coffee, meet with colleagues – in other words to enrich their lives.

I remain hopeful that another landlord on the San Vicente strip will see the value of this establishment as both a cultural treasure and a great business opportunity to partner with an enterprise carrying dozens of loyal customers who will show up for their breakfast, lunch, and a smile every day.”
