Children’s Author Karen B. Winnick to Appear June 22 at DIESEL, A Bookstore
Children’s author and wildlife advocate Karen B. Winnick will appear at DIESEL, A Bookstore in Brentwood on Sunday, June 22, at 4:00 p.m. to present and sign copies of her latest nonfiction picture book, Why Wolves Matter: A Conservation Success Story.
The event, open to the public and held in the store’s outdoor courtyard, will highlight Winnick’s lyrical account of how the eradication—and eventual reintroduction—of wolves in Yellowstone National Park affected the park’s ecosystem. Seating is free but limited; attendees may reserve a seat by purchasing a copy of the book here.
Why Wolves Matter explains the ecological ripple effects that followed the disappearance of wolves from Yellowstone, including overgrazing by elk and the subsequent decline of trees, birds, and other species. Through engaging storytelling supported by a timeline and bibliography, the book teaches young readers about the importance of top predators in maintaining natural balance.
Winnick, a long-time animal advocate, is active with the Los Angeles Zoo oversight commission and supports numerous conservation organizations, including those focused on wolf preservation. Her previous works have often centered on animal life, blending accessible science with heartfelt storytelling.
