TV Writer Jon Cowan Brings Legal Thriller Proof to Diesel A Bookstore in Brentwood

The Suits Producer and First-Time Novelist Will Discuss His Debut Courtroom Drama

Television writer and producer Jon Cowan will appear at DIESEL, A Bookstore in Brentwood, on Tuesday, July 1, to discuss and sign copies of his debut novel Proof: A Thriller. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the store’s courtyard.

Cowan will be joined in conversation by fellow author and screenwriter Ben H. Winters. The event is free and open to the public, though seating is limited. Attendees can reserve seats by purchasing a copy of Proof through the bookstore.

A veteran of television’s legal drama genre, Cowan has written and produced episodes for series including Suits, Private Practice, and Bones. His first novel introduces Jake West, a disgraced lawyer battling alcoholism who finds himself accused of murdering his former best friend. As Jake fights to clear his name, he dives into a tangle of legal secrets connected to his father’s powerful Los Angeles law firm.

Described as a gritty and fast-paced legal thriller, Proof has drawn comparisons to the works of John Grisham and Scott Turow. The story follows Jake’s journey to redemption as he teams up with a group of misfits to unearth long-buried truths, risking his safety and professional future in the process.

Cowan, who began his career in theater before transitioning to television, earned an MFA from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, and Television. He currently resides in Los Angeles and is at work on the next installment in the Jake West series.

Joining Cowan at the event, Winters is known for his best-selling novels Golden State, Underground Airlines, and The Last Policeman trilogy. His recent projects include the CBS drama Tracker, the Apple TV+ series Manhunt, and a new comic-book series, Benjamin, launched in June 2025.
