Preservation Deemed Infeasible Due to Economic and Social Factors
The historic Barry Building on San Vicente Boulevard may soon face demolition following a recent decision by the City of Los Angeles that deems preservation of the site economically and socially infeasible.
According to a Letter of Determination issued June 6, 2025, by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety, the city has concluded that a demolition permit “may be issued” for the property at 11973 West San Vicente Boulevard. The building, known as the Barry Building, has long been the subject of debate over its historic significance and redevelopment potential.
The determination cites specific economic, social, or other factors that, in the city’s view, prevent viable preservation of the structure. Full details of the decision are outlined in the letter, which is available through the department.
The San Vicente Brentwood Residents Association (SBRA) announced this in their June 22 newsletter and has contacted a representative for the property to clarify whether demolition is imminent or if additional reviews or conditions remain. As of that week, the property representative indicated they are still reviewing the city’s determination and plan to respond soon.
