Great Tastes Called Off
“It is with a heavy heart that we made the decision to take a one year hiatus from this wonderful event,†said Betty Graham, President, Coldwell Banker Greater Los Angeles Company. Graham was referring to Great Tastes in Brentwood, a local fundraising event for public schools. Coldwell Banker has sponsored the event for twenty years. Graham blamed the soft economy for the decision.

“We have already begun working on next year,†she said, “which we know will be bigger and better than ever.â€

“We look forward to seeing everyone next year at Great Tastes in Brentwood 2009,†said Carole Schiffer, producer and director of Great Tastes in Brentwood.

Fourth of July Road Rage
Two cyclists were injured on Mandeville Canyon Road in what police are describing as a “road-rage†incident.

On July 4, two experienced cyclists were injured in an incident that has become ground zero for the Mandeville Canyon community and cyclists, and the turning point in a relationship between bicyclists and motorists in the Los Angeles area.

Cyclists Ron Peterson and Christian Stoehr were injured when Christopher T. Thompson slammed on his brakes only a few feet ahead of them. With no space to turn away from the vehicle, Peterson crashed head first through the rear windshield of Thompson’s car, breaking his nose and teeth, and nearly severing his nose in the crash. Stoehr will require surgery to repair a separated shoulder.

Thompson has been charged with two counts of felony reckless driving.
A closed meeting followed the incident between the Mandeville Canyon Homeowners Association, Councilman Bill Rosendahl and members of the cycling community, DOT and other public officials to investigate solutions to sharing the road successfully.  Councilman Rosendahl has introduced the Cyclists Bill of Rights that has been affirmed by the Los Angeles City Council, to promote safer conditions for cyclists.

A Mandeville-Bicycling Task Force has been formed as a result. The task force will begin an education campaign to mitigate road rage incidents by creating successful communication between motorists and cyclists.
