Maestro Alvin MillsOn Sunday May 16, 2010 The Brentwood-Westwood Symphony Orchestra Association concludes its 57th anniversary “Gala Season†with the “Artists of Tomorrow Concert.†It will feature Grand Prize Winner Kendra James (Viola) who will be awarded the $1,000 Howard Engelman Scholarship.

Also performing are contest winners Hannah Swayze (French Horn), Julie Oh (Flute), Rachael Huang (Piano), Sue Anne Cho (Piano), Sheng Zhang (String) and Alize Rozsnyai (voice). They will be performing works by Mozart, Dvorak, Chopin, Strauss and Rachmaninoff.

The concert will be conducted by Founder/Music Director Maestro Alvin Mills and Assistant Conductor Cary Belling. Mills told the Brentwood News that he is “very impressed with all of these young artists†and complimented their work ethic noting that they practice three and four houGrand Prize Winner Kendra Jamesrs per day. He was particularly impressed with Ms. James who, he said, made the switch to viola only a few years ago after studying the violin for over ten years. Mills went on to say that all of the young artists “uphold the honor of classical music and will carry on its tradition.â€

The Artists of Tomorrow Contest has been an annual Brentwood event for more than thirty years and has produced some winners who have gone on to achieve great things in the classical music world including Sheryl Staples who is the current Principal Assistant Concertmaster at the New York Philharmonic.

Sunday’s concert is free to the public (tax-deductible donations welcome) and will be held at 3 p.m. at the Paul Revere Middle School Auditorium located at 1450 Allenford Ave. in Brentwood.
