A Taste of South Brentwood

Founded in 1976, South Brentwood Residents Association (SBRA) represents approximately 3,000 home-owners and renters in the area south of San Vicente Blvd., north of Wilshire Blvd., east of Centinela Ave. and west of Federal Ave. In addition to our annual meeting where we hear from our local elected officials, we have recently hosted community meetings about urban coyotes, disaster preparedness and public safety, as well as major issues such as the proposed subway, Wilshire corridor development and the revision of the Community Plan. SBRA works with residents and provides statements to elected officials and decision makers regarding issues of concern to our community.

South Brentwood is home to several popular attractions. The Farmers Market is open every Sunday 9:00 A.M.-2:30 P.M. and parallels the Safran Family playground and Brentwood Green fields where the public is welcome; it is very popular. Market Sunday and a visit to the Brentwood Green playground are fun destinations for all ages.

Many residents have called South Brentwood home for decades. Marie and John Lewis moved to South Brentwood with their three children in 1959 when it had “nice little houses and apartments,†much less traffic and no speed bumps. Their children attended neighborhood schools and Marie and John raised chickens and ducks in their backyard. They remember it felt like a small community and everyone knew one another.

Marie served as Vice President and then President of the South Brentwood Homeowners’ Association (SBHA preceded SBRA) for several years. As President, she attended meetings of the Brentwood Community Federation while the Brentwood-Pacific Palisades Community Plan was taking shape.
The large buildings on Wilshire Blvd, built in the 1980s, were a shock to the neighborhood because this area previously had a quiet, rural character. Although SBHA unsuccessfully fought the height variances required to build tall buildings on Wilshire Blvd., it was instrumental in notifying authorities when buildings under construction on Wilshire dug into the 13-foot sacred Gabriolino Tongva Indian water table.

As a result of the many changes in the neighborhood Marie and John have seen since they first came to live in South Brentwood, they realize how necessary it is for all of us to work to maintain our sense of community. We invite you to join us! Go to www.southbrentwood.org or contact us at 149 Barrington Ave. #194 LA 90049 or 310/281-8566 or info@southbrentwood.com.
