Smith to Explore Autism, ADHD, and the Power of Self-Understanding
Diesel, A Bookstore in Brentwood, will host author and autism specialist Sol Smith on Wednesday, May 7, at 6:30 p.m. for a discussion and signing of his new book, The Autistic’s Guide to Self-Discovery: Flourishing as a Neurodivergent Adult.
The free event will take place in the bookstore’s outdoor courtyard at 225 26th St., Suite 33. While admission is complimentary, seating is limited. Guests are encouraged to reserve a seat by purchasing a copy of Smith’s book through the store here.
Drawing from both scientific research and his personal experiences as a late-diagnosed autistic adult, Smith will explore how neurodivergent individuals can better understand and accept themselves—and how neurotypical allies can more effectively support them. He argues that masking or changing behavior to fit societal expectations often leads to harmful effects like isolation, depression, and anxiety.
“Understand yourself, accept yourself, and reduce conflict,” Smith advises.
Smith is a certified autism specialist who is autistic, dyslexic, and has ADHD. He spent more than 20 years as a college professor before focusing on coaching autistic and ADHD individuals to lead more autonomous lives. Known for his widely viewed educational content on TikTok, Smith has also led neurodiversity training sessions for corporations around the world. He currently lives in Southern California with his wife and four children.
