Brentwood Library debuts its 2015 Summer Calendar

Kaufman Brentwood Branch Library is located at 11820 San Vicente Boulevard.
Kaufman Brentwood Branch Library is located at 11820 San Vicente Boulevard.

In between the adrenaline rush of summer camp and those lazy beach days, children and teens can find respite at the Kaufman Brentwood Library this summer with the branch’s new calendar of events.

Taking full advantage of the public library is the best antidote to the “summer slide” – the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains made during the previous school year. From June to August, the Brentwood Library has created a stimulating round up for young people and adults alike to ensure literacy and self-growth.

And remember: If you don’t have one
already, a library card is only $10 for an individual member.
Summer Fun For Kids & Teens

The theme for the 2015 Summer Fun in the Library Program, for ages 3 to 11, is “Read to the Rhythm,” a lineup of musical story times and crafts, a science show and one big party at the end of July to close the program.

Music scores craft, where kids will turn sheet music into unexpected items to play or use, will arrive on June 17. After, it’s Ukulele Storytime with Ms. Hilary on June 24. The month of July boasts a Hansel and Gretel opera, a music e-source lesson, instrument crafts, a science show that explores sounds and noise, and, finally, the Summer Fun Party Finale on July 29.

Piggybacking off of the kids’ “Read to the Rhythm” theme, the Teen Summer Reading Program kicks off June 13 for ages 11 to 18. The party will feature steel drum player Joseph Peck, books and crafts. On July 11, teens will regroup to invite their friends for musical magnets, a chance to make their own lodestones. Finally, on July 25 Maria Lew will share her recipe for vegetable dumplings while also helping teens assemble and cook the food. August 1 will conclude the program with a movie and summer reading finale party.

Events for the rest

The Kaufman Brentwood Branch Library has three big events in each month of the summer season for everyone else. They’re free, inspirational and held in the Community Room on the second floor.

On Saturday, June 12, renowned book club facilitator, Judith Palarz, will lead a book discussion on Pulitzer Prize-winning Elizabeth Strout’s The Burgess Boys, a novel about the ties that bind identity to family and home. Palarz will recreate the success of her December program during this summer’s provocative and illuminating discussion about the book. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk.

In July, celebrate the 21st anniversary of the library’s opening on July 17, 1994. On Saturday, July 18, two programs will commemorate the occasion: “The Wizard of Oz Puppet Show” by Luce Puppet Company for children and family in the morning, followed by a dramatic performance at 2 p.m. from the Pacific Resident Theatre. The night will conclude with a feast for all from the neighboring Brentwood markets.

Lastly, on Sunday, Aug. 16, join the Friends of the Kaufman Brentwood Brand Library for the 28th annual “Pat Pincus Poetry Festival.” The Library and Friends are encouraging the public to submit their work (no more than 3 poems, one page each in length) and sending it to the library at 11820 San Vicente Blvd., no later than Monday, July 13.

For more information about the Summer Reading Programs, call the brand at 310.575.8273 and ask for the Young Adult Librarian. Visit lapl.org/branches/brentwood for more information and events.
