Environmental activist Leah Garland, made Councilmember Mike Bonin’s 2017 Neighborhood Hero list.
At the end of every year, Councilmember Mike Bonin honors a representative from each of the communities he overseas in District 11. In December 2017, Bonin chose Leah Garland as Brentwood’s Neighborhood Hero.
In his decision to honor Garland, Bonin wrote, “Leah has become one of the region’s most passionate and outspoken environmental activists, mobilizing people to speak up against climate change and for renewable energy and environmental justice. Leah is fighting to create healthier communities through the statewide organization Food & Water Watch – California, an organization which champions healthy food and clean water for all. Through her work with Food & Water Watch, Leah has raised awareness about the harmful effects of oil drilling on the environment and on human beings – especially near Aliso Canyon and other Southern California Gas facilities.
“Leah is active with Stand Together Against Neighborhood Drilling, and organization that advocates for LA to take a more active role in preventing oil and gas drilling from endangering public health. Leah has traveled throughout the City, speaking to a variety of neighborhood councils about STAND LA’s key initiative – which I support – to create a buffer zone between oil and gas operations and where people live, work and go to school.
“Leah was also a member of the Steering Committee of SoCal 350 Climate Action, a coalition of organizations committed to energizing and empowering Southern California communities to fight climate change and advocate for 100 percent clean and renewable energy. She also hosts a local radio program on environmental issues. Leah’s passion for the environment has informed and inspired others to take action to protect the environment.”
Congratulations Leah!
