The Joseph Phelps website describes the vineyard: “Over the years, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has become synonymous with ‘Insignia.’ A true visionary, Joe was among the first American winemakers to recognize the merit of blending, debuting ‘Insignia’ in 1974. As California’s pioneer proprietary red Bordeaux-style blend, Insignia firmly established the winery as a premier Napa Valley producer.”

The biography adds, “Joe chose the name Insignia to symbolize the finest lots from each vintage, emphasizing blending’s importance over varietal designation. Insignia embodies Joe’s foundational philosophy that crafting the best requires giving your best. Almost fifty years later, Insignia stands as one of the world’s most iconic wines. The 2002 vintage was honored as “Wine of the Year” by Wine Spectator magazine in 2005, and Wine Advocate has awarded four unprecedented perfect 100-point scores to the 1991, 1997, 2002, and 2007 vintages. According to Robert Parker, “Insignia remains one of the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blends.”
