Girl Scouts spruce the Brentwood Post Office

The 11 Landscaping Girl Scouts of Troop #12755
Troop #12755 removed 17 bags of refuse, planted 60 new plants, spread 20 bags of mulch and swept and removed dead leaves form the sidewalk along Barrington in front of the building.

The Troop has been preparing for the project since January, when they dedicated a portion of their annual cookie sale — the girls sold 3000+ boxes of cookies thanks in part to Tom Safran allowing them to set up their stand on one of his properties — profits to cleaning up the post office and re-landscaping the trash strewn area.

The Troop then asked Brentwood-based, certified arborist, Lisa Smith, who consults on the care of Brentwood’s Coral Trees, to volunteer her time with a landscape plan, a lesson on planting and wholesale pricing on plants. Thanks to Smith’s insights, te girls were able to complete the entire project for less than $1,000.

In a nod to the favorite color of Brentwood Post Office namesake, actor Karl Malden, the girls planted 20 purple sea lavender flowers, as well as other drought tolerant plants, such as flax, dwarf olive and rosemary.

Troop #12755 will receive their Community Service Badge at the June 4th Brentwood Community Council meeting, where former Councilman Bill Rosendahl will present the girls with a badge of their own design.

“The Girl Scout program is built on combining leadership, goal setting and citizenship. These girls are only in second-and-third grade, but they were tough negotiators, great salespeople and tight with a dollar, everything they learned will serve them well in the future,” said Troop Leader, Michelle Bisnoff.

The girls rewarded their success this year by taking part in the Junior Marine Biologist Program at Aquarium of the Pacific followed by afternoon tea at the Queen Mary, all paid for with money they earned from selling cookies.
