Officer Chelico lost his leg when a drunk driver plowed into him during a traffic stop on the 405 Freeway.
Family, friends and supporters of Brentwood Police Office Chelico have launched a Go Fund Me Campaign, after Officer Chelico lost his right leg while on duty on Dec. 11.
The incident occurred just before midnight on Dec. 11 as Officer Chelico was conducting a traffic stop on the freeway just south of Santa Monica Boulevard.
The driver, Douglas Donovan of Woodland Hills was in a 2003 Infinity Q35 and rear-ended Officer Chelico’s patrol car. The car then struck Officer Chelico, severing his leg.
Donovan was not injured in the crash and was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
Officer Chelico’s Go Fund Me page reads:
Family and friends today are in need for your help. The other night one of our own was hit by a drunk driver after conducting a traffic stop. The impact from the crash was so violent that it severed his right leg. Officer Chelico is not only a great officer, but has been a great friend. In efforts to assist officer Chelico and his family during these hard times, especially during the holiday season, we ask for a small contribution. Our goal is to make this long recovery process as smooth as possible. We stand with our brother, his wife, and his daughter in whatever they might need. Thank you all for your prayers and generosity.
