Black’s Surprise Appearance Follows a Week of Wild Audience Behavior
Actor Jack Black unexpectedly appeared at an AMC Century City theater over the weekend, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, stepping in to address the rowdy behavior that has plagued screenings of The Minecraft Movie since its release.
During the April 11–13 weekend, Black entered an auditorium incognito, playfully altering his voice to deliver a faux theater PSA. “For today’s presentation of The Minecraft Movie, please no throwing popcorn,” he intoned, referencing a viral trend tied to his character’s now-notorious line, “chicken jockey!”
Upon revealing his identity and speaking in his natural voice, the audience erupted in cheers as Black waved a large prop ax from the film. “Look what I brought,” he said, met by a chorus of laughter and applause.
The visit comes amid increasing reports of disruptive antics during the movie’s opening week. Social media videos have shown attendees tossing popcorn, drinks, and even a live chicken in response to key moments in the film, particularly when Black’s character delivers his now-famous line. Some clips depict theatergoers being escorted out, with at least one incident reportedly involving police intervention.
The commotion has prompted some exhibitors to take action. Cinema United, a global trade group representing thousands of theaters, issued suggested guidelines urging pre-show warnings and recommending that authorities be contacted if behavior escalates.
However, Regal Theaters is taking advantage of the viral trend by announcing a special “Chicken Jockey” screening on April 20 in a 4DX theater.
