Red Flag Warning Issued for Los Angeles Amid High Winds and Fire Danger

Residents in High-Risk Areas Urged to Prepare for Potential Evacuations

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Los Angeles, with extreme fire danger expected due to very high winds in the mountains and valleys through Wednesday evening. The most hazardous conditions are forecast for the Santa Monica Mountains between 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 9 and 2:00 p.m. Tuesday. The canyon areas of Brentwood, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and West Hollywood have several red-flag parking zones.

To mitigate risks, Red Flag Parking restrictions will be in effect from 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, through 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11. Residents can view affected parking zones using the Interactive Red Flag Parking Map.

Officials urge residents in fire-prone areas to take immediate precautions:

  • Avoid using outdoor power tools, grilling, campfires, and barbecues.
  • Ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished.
  • Keep flammable materials, such as dry brush, away from homes and structures.
  • Have fire extinguishers on hand and ensure household members know how to use them.

Even those not in the vicinity of active fires may experience the impact of wildfire smoke, which can travel hundreds of miles. Health effects range from eye and respiratory irritation to exacerbated heart and lung conditions, including asthma. People with preexisting conditions are advised to stay indoors and follow medical advice.

For those who must spend extended periods outdoors in smoke-affected areas, wearing a NIOSH-certified N95 respirator mask is recommended.

Residents in high-risk fire areas should remain vigilant and ready to evacuate. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) offers the following tips:

  • Sign up for NotifyLA alerts and encourage neighbors to do the same.
  • Keep phones on and avoid using “do not disturb” mode during high-risk periods to receive critical alerts.
  • Monitor LAFD Alerts for updates on Red Flag Parking restrictions and active fires.
  • Prepare a go-bag with essential items and place it near your front door.
  • Plan multiple evacuation routes in your neighborhood.
  • Establish two meeting places outside your home—one within walking distance and another reachable by car.
  • Park vehicles off-street and back them into driveways or garages to leave roads clear for emergency responders.

For more information, visit the LAFD’s official website or follow updates via NotifyLA and LAFD Alerts.
