Loretta Sanchez, congresswoman from Orange County now running for U.S. Senate, paid a visit to Brentwood Sunday, Nov. 15 at a backyard fundraiser hosted by Tom Safran.
Safran, the Brentwood Community Council’s “Centennial Plus-10” community recognition awardee, sponsors several of these during campaign season and remains neutral, often sponsoring separate events for competing candidates.
Rep. Sanchez (D-Santa Ana) impressed with both her back-story and her knowledge of military and home security issues. She is the daughter of Mexican immigrants, graduated from Chapman College and American University (MBA) and now serves as a Member of Congress.
She is married to a retired Army colonel and has studied security issues intensively, earning her key roles on the Armed Services and Homeland Security committees of congress.
She is also known for working across the aisle, and the Republican-led U.S. Congress often picks Sanchez to represent U.S. interests before NATO and other organizations working to come up with solutions to security issues.
Sanchez said that as the election nears and people begin to get serious about the candidates and their positions – and as other candidates are winnowed out – her candidacy will surge.
On the Democratic side, Sanchez is running against Kamala Harris, Attorney General for the State of California, and Stewart Albertson. Six Republicans are also running. The top two vote getters will move on to the general election.
If elected, Sanchez would be the first Latino to serve in the U.S. Senate.
