Designer and Rowing Champion Explores the History of an Iconic Garment

Jack Carlson, renowned designer, author, and former U.S. national rowing team member, will visit Diesel: A Bookstore in Brentwood on Friday, December 6, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss and sign copies of the newly revised and expanded edition of his book, Rowing Blazers. Rowing Blazers is a vibrant exploration of the history and significance of the iconic rowing blazer, a garment rooted in tradition and collegiate rowing culture. Originally crafted for British boathouse crews, the blazer has become synonymous with classic American style.

The revised edition showcases expanded content, including profiles of historic and contemporary rowing clubs worldwide, such as the University of Washington, featured in the film The Boys in the Boat, and Manley Career Academy High School in Chicago, home to the nation’s first all-Black high school rowing team. Additionally, the book highlights programs like Row New York and Fulham Reach Boat Club, which prioritize diversity and inclusion in rowing.

Rich with stunning photography, Rowing Blazers takes readers on a journey through atmospheric boathouses and campuses, spotlighting the athletes and traditions that define the sport.

Jack Carlson is an accomplished designer, archaeologist, and athlete. As the founder of the cult menswear brand Rowing Blazers, Carlson has collaborated with prominent brands such as Gucci, Seiko, and the NBA. A three-time member of the U.S. rowing team, Carlson won a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships and is a Henley Royal Regatta champion. He also holds a doctorate in archaeology from Oxford University.

Miles Fisher, who will moderate the conversation, is a serial entrepreneur and co-founder of Metaphysic, a leading AI platform. Fisher is also a classically trained performer, with numerous film and TV credits. An honors graduate of Harvard, he is deeply involved in Los Angeles cultural and philanthropic initiatives.
