Stop Senior Scams Performance at Brentwood Libary

Performance workshop this weekend at Donald Bruce Kaufman – Brentwood Branch Library

By Sam Catanzaro

This week a Westside insurance agent was ordered to pay nearly $1 million to an elderly client whom he defrauded out of the full purchase price of her home. This weekend a program at the Brentwood public library helps seniors protect themselves against such scams.

On August 12, Clement Lancelot Chichester, 69, of Marina del Rey was ordered to pay $750,000 to an elderly client whom he defrauded out of the full purchase price of her home, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Chichester additionally was placed on one year of formal probation and was sentenced to 24 days in county jail for time served.

He pleaded no contest on July 16 to one felony count each of theft from an elder adult by a non-caretaker, forgery and passing a non-sufficient funds check. Those charges were reduced to misdemeanors at sentencing as part of a negotiated plea agreement.

Chichester was the longtime insurance agent and financial adviser of the victim, a 93-year-old woman.

The defendant was accused of investing his client’s money in securities without making legally required material disclosures. He then wrote bad checks for the purchase of her Culver City home and filed a forged document indicating that the payments had been completed in full.

On Saturday, September 14 at 2 p.m. learn to protect yourself and your loved ones from scams that target older adults at the Donald Bruce Kaufman – Brentwood Branch Library.

“Stop Senior Scams Acting Program uses theater to dramatize senior scams and educates older adults about the dangers of fraud and how to prevent it. The performers aged 60 to 97 years old, use skits to demonstrate their experiences to teach you how to identify and stop elder abuse. Learn valuable lessons and enjoy this wonderful program. All ages welcome!,” says the library.
