Update on Thursday evening incident last week on San Vicente Boulevard

By Sam Catanzaro

An unhoused unhoused Navy veteran was reportedly among those injured when an SUV slammed into a Brentwood homeless encampment last week.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the incident was reported at 12:34 a.m. near 11500 W San Vicente Boulevard next to the West Los Angeles VA.

“A single vehicle drove through a homeless encampment, striking several people,” the LAFD said. “After an extensive search of the area, a total of three patients were located and assessed. Thankfully, only minor injuries resulted and all declined hospital transport.”

Since Brentwood News first reported on the incident, more information has become available.

Among those who were injured was the driver, who was not taken into custody at the scene. In addition, the Los Angeles Times has reported that an unhoused Navy veteran was hurt.

“At first I didn’t know what happened,” said Navy veteran John Schwartz who was was sleeping in a tent when the incident occurred. “I woke up and I looked at the car, and I realized the car crashed into the tent.”

According to the Brentwood Community Council (BCC), “early reports indicating the driver swerved to avoid an encampment resident standing in the San Vicente roadway.”
