Substance Abuse in California and Nevada: Prevalence, Treatment Resources, and Cost?

Substance abuse is an issue with serious health, personal, and societal consequences in California and throughout the nation. Between April 2020 and April 2021, there were 107,622 reported fatal drug overdoses. That’s a record-high number that surpasses the number of deaths from car crashes, guns, and even flu and pneumonia.

Alcohol and drug problematic use can happen to anyone. In rehabilitation facilities Las Vegas, there are people from any walk of life. They have people who are homeless, and they have people who drive up their Mercedes Benz.

The Factors Contributing to Substance Abuse in California and Neighboring Nevada

Due to its unique location, California is a prime target for drug trafficking as it shares its borders with Nevada and Arizona. The large expanse of interstate through borderline and rural areas provides opportunities for high-intensity drug trafficking. Moreover, the city of Las Vegas presents another challenge with its incidence of gambling, money laundering, and drug smuggling.

At its beginning, the pandemic decreased the rate of drug trafficking in the U.S. But the risks of illegal drugs, and the overdose rates consequently, persisted as smugglers adapted and began to lace drugs (cocaine, weed, heroin, etc.) with extremely potent synthetic components like fentanyl. Also, during the lockdown, drug dealers switched to online sources of selling and purchasing drugs.

The good news is that anyone who needs help in battling substance abuse and addiction can get it in any state. A Nevadian can enter the best rehab facilities in Nevada or go to neighboring California if they want to ensure more privacy and distance themselves from the places, people, and things associated with using drugs or alcohol.

How Serious a Problem Is It in California?

According to The Substance Use in California Almanac (2022 Edition), the problem in question is quite widespread in the Golden State. It presents the following data (annual average from 2018 to 2019):

  • About 2.9 million Californians (9%) aged 12 and older had a substance use disorder (SUD).
  • The rate of SUDs among young adults (aged 18 to 25) was almost twice as high as that of adults (aged 26 and older) and more than three times as high as that of teenagers (aged 12 to 17).
  • Alcohol is the most popular substance abused. More than half of all adults reported drinking in the previous month. 6% of respondents met the criteria for abuse of or addiction to alcohol. Alcohol use disorders were most common among adults 26+.
  • Marijuana remains the top illegal drug of choice among all age groups. 20% reported smoking marijuana in the past year.

SUD Treatment in California

The Golden State has some of the nation’s top-rated alcohol and drug rehab facilities. In 2019, 88% of California SUD treatment facilities were privately owned, and other centers were operated by the locals, communities, counties, and government.

We cannot but rejoice at the fact that SUD treatment becomes more accessible. Between 2017 and 2019, the number of rehabilitation centers providing residential care grew by 68%. In general, California rehabs offer each type of care – outpatient, residential, and combined.

Choosing an in-state rehab does have its benefits – saving money, keeping up with family and job obligations, and receiving more support from close people as they can participate in family therapy. However, jet-setting off to the best drug rehabs in Nevada also has its advantages.

How Serious a Problem Is It in Nevada?

Before talking about the best rehab centers in Nevada, let’s take a look at the situation with alcohol and drug use in the state. Nevada Resiliency Fund released “The Opioid Needs Assessment” (2022 Edition) which reviews the rates of alcohol and drug abuse. Here’re some stats:

  • From 2019-2020, the state saw a 55% rise in fatal drug overdoses.
  • In 2020, 788 drug-related overdose deaths happened. 65% were attributed to opioids, 32% to fentanyl, 28% to prescription opioids, 16% to heroin, and about 5% to methadone.
  • A worrisome fact is an increase in the percentage of overdoses among young adults (aged 18-24 years) and adults (25-34 years).

SUD Treatment in Nevada

Entering an out-of-state rehab is a fresh start for many. No one knows who you are and what your story is. Leaving your environment can help break harmful patterns and habits that lead to substance abuse in the first place.

Nevada is home to luxury drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, as well as affordable and free treatment centers for people with SUDs. If you are planning to get into rehab in The Silver State, you probably want to know how much it costs.

The truth is that addiction rehab cost in Nevada varies from one treatment center to another. Multiple factors affect SUD treatment cost:

  • Facility type (private/governmental, profit/non-profit)
  • Location
  • Staff qualification
  • Medication received
  • Services used
  • Length of treatment
  • Type of addiction
  • Co-occurring disorder

There’s no set pricing for addiction treatment in the state, but we can give you a general idea of what private treatment centers charge. To get a precise price for your treatment program services, contact a chosen facility.

  • On average, you can pay from $5000 to $50000 per month for private inpatient treatment services for alcohol or drugs use disorder.
  • Outpatient programs range from $1500 to $7000 per month. The best drug rehab centers in Nevada can cost up to $1,000 a day.
  • An outpatient or inpatient detox cost can add from $1000 up to $5000 a day to your fee.

Some health insurance plans offer coverage for SUD treatment. Besides, there are low-cost and free options like a sliding fee scale based on an individual’s income, state-run or donation-based rehabilitation programs, and faith-based rehab centers.

When you don’t get treatment for alcohol or drug addiction for any reason including cost, the consequence can be extreme – serious health issues, broken relationships, job loss, overdose, or death.
